Homemade “pizza” can be both delicious and healthy if you make it using an unusual base, according to an expert. Dr Hazel Wallace, a doctor, nutritionist, personal trainer and author, has a popular channel on TikTok sharing quick and easy recipes.
In one video, shared with her 156,000 followers on her @drhazelwallace account, Dr Wallace shows how you can create an unconventional pizza-style dish using ingredients you may already have at home. And best of all, there’s no need to spend time mixing up and kneading the dough, and getting flour everywhere. Dr Wallace says for those looking for “healthy, delicious food” fast, the dish “ticks all those boxes”.
She adds that it’s also “super versatile” so you can easily put your own spin on it.
The foodie uses a tortilla base, which you can buy premade, and spreads some marinara sauce or passata for that rich tomato flavour, and cracks a couple of eggs on top, as well as adding cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, herbs and seasoning.
In the clip, she also adds avocado, showing how you can tweak the recipe to your taste.
It’s a great way to use up leftovers in the fridge and is also incredibly quick to make.
In the description accompanying the video, she recommends cooking it in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes at 180C.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for other unconventional ways to use tortillas in your next homemade meal, Mary Berry’s “Mexican Lasagne” recipe from her BBC show Foolproof Cooking may be for you.
The TV chef and national treasure says in the recipe notes that the “all-in-one dish” is “so quick to make”.
“Think Mexican lasagne using ready-made tortillas instead of sheets of pasta,” she adds.
