Tough stains will quickly disappear with £2 hair product

It can sometimes be very tricky to remove stubborn stains from items and furniture in our homes. Some can even be impossible to get rid of completely.

While most homeowners may opt for cleaning agents and stain removers, there is a slightly more unusual method that can be particularly effective. A person took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips page on Facebook, which has 537,000 members, to ask for advice on how to remove tomato sauce from her floor. She said she has tried a number of methods, but the stain is refusing to budge.

Tegan Strickland posted: “Help my son knocked a spatula that had tomato pasta sauce off the counter and it’s splattered on the floor and stained! I’ve tried using hot water, CIF cream cleaner, stain remover and washing up liquid but the stain just won’t go!

“It’s laminate flooring. It’s in more places too like just under the sink and things but I just can’t lift the stain. Advice please.”

A total of 137 people have commented on the post to offer their advice so far. A number of them agreed on one item that is particularly effective in getting rid of stains.

Ann Bishop said: “Hairspray is my go to stain remover always.” Her comment has been liked nine times.

Maria Whitaker put: “Hairspray – spray on and just wipe. Do it a couple of times! It got permanent marker off my wooden table.”

Karen Yeardley agreed: “Hairspray,” while Heather E Bentley also commented the same thing. Norma Muir also simply wrote: “Hairspray”.

Hairspray is particularly effective at removing a number of different stains, including ink, paint, lipstick and sweat. It has a high alcohol content which helps to dissolve the stain before being rubbed away by a cloth.

However, it’s worth bearing in mind that some hairsprays have a higher alcohol volume than others. This can impact how effective they are.

Experts from The Spruce said: “Most hairsprays contain alcohol, which helps dissolve the ink and remove the stain. Try to find a hairspray with a high alcohol content, often the least expensive brands are best.”

The Wella Silvikrin Hairspray Maximum Hold is available on Amazon for just £1.99. Hairsprays typically have an alcohol content of between 25% and 50%.
