The secret ingredient that can ‘transform’ any vegetable

Everyone knows that vegetables play a vital part in a healthy diet but they can sometimes be a bit boring and bland. However, there is one ingredient that can easily transform vegetables to make them far more appealing.

A home chef took to the social site Reddit to ask for a cooking tip or secret ingredient. Users shared a host of advice, including adding extra butter and seasoning, such as salt and pepper, and focusing on high-quality ingredients. Others agreed that one particular spice, which is used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, is the perfect seasoning for vegetables.

Nisshaaa posted on Reddit: “What’s the one cooking tip or secret ingredient that transformed your dishes?” Over 200 people have since commented on the post recommending a number of ingredients.

The most popular comment is from a user called 1999falcon who said: “Sumac on vegetables.” BelliAmie agreed: “In my salad dressing as well. Takes roasted cauliflower to the next level!”

In a separate thread on Reddit, one user recommended using sumac like lemon juice. Jamiebnatural wrote: “You can use it like you would use lemon juice as a seasoning. Vegetarian Flavor Bible recommends it with feta, whole grains, and zucchini. Also, bell peppers, onion, tomatoes, and garlic.”

Notyetgod added: “I love it, but I also don’t know a lot of ways to use it. It’s great on raw vegetables, like cucumber or tomato.”

YourBrainOnJazz put: “My favorite use for sumac is hard boiled eggs. You hard boil the eggs, peel, then cut into 4ths. Season the eggs with sumac, salt, pepper, paprika, and a bit of garlic powder. Best breakfast food!”

Sumac, which has a deep red colour, is known for its tart and slightly sweet flavour. As well as vegetables, it can be used to season both savoury and sweet dishes.

It is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Sumac has also been used to help digestion while research suggests it can help regulate blood sugar levels.

On how to use suman, The Spice Way said: “Incorporating sumac into your cooking is simple. Use it as a finishing touch for a burst of color and flavor, or mix it into spice rubs and dressings. Start with a small amount and adjust to taste, here is how you can use it in your life.”

Like other spices, sumac should be stored in an airtight container in a cool and dark place. It can last for up to a year if stored properly.
