Peace lilies are known to be low-maintenance houseplants and are usually easy to keep alive as long as you water them occasionally. However, once summer arrives, watering is not enough as they need to be moved away from windowsills if you want to keep them alive.
It is common to keep plants near windows since they need light, but peace lilies are sensitive and too much sun can burn their leaves, causing their flowers to turn brown and crispy. Instead, Craig Wilson, a gardening expert and founder of Gardeners Dream has shared peace lilies will flourish if you take a few seconds to move them somewhere more humid in your home.
Craig said: “Peace lilies need watering, but not nearly as much as you might expect. Normally, it is best to water your peace lily every few days, with the plant even being tolerant to being watered less often if it is kept somewhere humid in the house like the bathroom.”
Peace lilies are tropical flowers which grow on rainforest floors in their natural habitat, and they survive by absorbing moisture out of the hot humid air.
This is why it is much better to keep a peace lily in a corner of your bathroom, or even the kitchen, as the hot steam helps keep them watered and healthy.
Peace lilies in rainforest also receive patchy low sunlight that is filtered by huge trees which is why it is best to keep them fairy near but not pressed up against a window.
Craig said: “It is best not to leave peace lilies by external doors or windows because the plants don’t do well in exposed conditions.”
Too much sun or dry air can affect a peace lily’s ability to produce flowers, so taking a few seconds to move them to an area that better replicates their natural environment will help them bloom.
However, if there is no room for a peace lily in your bathroom or kitchen then do not worry as frequently visited areas of the home also generate a fair amount of humidity.
People release a small amount of water as they breathe, so you can also keep a peace lily in your bedroom or living room to help them flourish.
If you can, find an area of your home that gets a lot of the morning sun, as peace lilies will enjoy the more gentle light compared to the harsher afternoon sun.
Rooms with east-facing windows tend to receive the most sunlight in the morning as the sun rises so also tend to be the best place to put a peace lily.
If you take a few seconds to move peace lilies to a better spot in your home, then you are more likely to get more flowers on your peace lily that will bloom for much longer.
