People who are planning to visit, or who are already in, Spain have been issued an alert with authorities urging them to “be very careful”. Spain is the most popular destination for British travellers, with millions of people from the UK travelling to Spain each year.

Industry experts predict this summer will be very busy for international travel, with millions of people expected to visit Spain in the coming months. Anyone who is currently visiting, or about to visit, Spain though has been given a warning for this weekend.

In an update on X, formerly Twitter, today from the official account of Spain’s General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies said the risk of forest fires will be “very high/extreme in large areas”, and urged people to “BE VERY CAREFUL!”

This followed an earlier update which said there were amber and yellow heat warnings in place for much of the country.

Spain’s Minister of the Interior has also moved to offer some advice. An update reads: “Limit your sun exposure. Eat light meals. Stay hydrated. Dress appropriately. Do not leave children or elderly people inside vehicles.”

Looking to next week, Spain’s national weather agency AEMET said it is predicting the heat to continue through to June 29. Its experts added: “Although there will be a drop in temperature in the far north and areas of the western and central parts of the Peninsula, this drop in temperature will not reach the eastern third and the Balearic Islands until Thursday, and will not be as pronounced.

“Furthermore, from that day on, the heat will return to a very warm end to the week.”
