Beginner gardeners praise barrel planters for ‘amazing’ displays’

Newbie gardeners who have gone a bit wild at the garden centre can invest in large planters to grow their new flowers and herbs, instead of using up all their ground space. Planters not only look lovely for display purposes, but they can also allow homeowners to try their hand at growing different things without taking up too much space.

Barrel planters are very popular mostly because they offer a rustic and charming look, and the round-shape offers plenty of room. Right now, a Vegtrug medium-sized barrel planter is on sale at Yimbly for £27.99, down from £34.99.

Yimbly is an online marketplace owned by The Express’s parent company, Reach Plc. New shoppers will also get free shipping on their first order.

Aside from Yimbly, gardeners can find reductions on planters and pots at other retailers, including Dunelm where this grey-finished Matlock Oval Plant Pot is £36, down from £45. According to the description, it can be used to display flowers or as a drinks cooler.

Back to the Vegtrug-sized barrel planter, it is a lovely addition to any garden or patio area. This product is great for adding colour and providing the perfect home for various plants. The base of the barrel is made of durable plastic to prevent rotting while allowing for maximum aeration and drainage.

The barrel planter can also be bought on Robert Dyas (£34.99). Here, potential buyers can find reviews and ratings. One shopper, new to gardening, wrote: “I bought this barrel because I wanted to plant something that grows big. I’m new to gardening and this was a great buy because for the cost, it looks amazing. It came in pieces and was easy to put together.

“I like the design of it and the colour. The drainage system is a great thing as it saves drilling holes. I haven’t planted anything in it yet but I plan to put a big plant in it. All of Robert Dyas products are great.”

A second customer bought them in the sale but was not happy, commenting: “They are attractive but a bit weaker than I anticipated. I’m not sure how long they will last. I’m pleased I bought them, but I wouldn’t have wanted to pay full price!”

For customers who are worried about the planter’s sturdiness a metal option might be a better choice. This Galvanised Large Metal Planter is £36.99 from B&Q, and is perfect for cyclamen, geraniums and other small plants.

Back to the barrel planter reviews on Robert Dyas, another said: “Looking good filled with plants. Strong and sturdy. Good value.”

A fourth concluded: “These are so strong, very attractive and amazing with the draining base. My son-in-law is so impressed he now wants some. Highly recommended.”
