‘We tested 10 plug-in hybrid vehicles and there was an obvious winner’

A group of motoring experts tested a range of plug-in hybrid vehicles on sale and came to a decision on the clear winner.

The team put vehicles from major manufacturers such as MG, Volkswagen, and Jaguar Land Rover to the test in a bid to determine which plug-in hybrid stands above the rest.

Plug-in hybrids combine an electric motor with a petrol engine; predominantly relying on the engine while also offering the capability to operate solely on electric power for brief spells.

These dual-powered vehicles offer a significant benefit over conventional petrol or electric cars, enabling emission-free driving in urban environments and switching back to petrol for longer distances, thereby mitigating ‘range anxiety’.

The internal combustion engine is not just for propulsion but can also help recharge the onboard battery.

The results were surprising, as the MG HS SUV, boasting a mix of British and Chinese automotive ingenuity, emerged as the victor.

A key factor in its victory was not only its array of features and practical design but also its affordability when compared to competitors.

It boasts an attractive price tag beginning at around £29,000, given its comprehensive equipment roster, particularly in its favoured SE trim level which carried a list price of £31,095.

The experts explained: “Think all plug-in hybrids are expensive? Prepare to think again because in our preferred entry-level SE trim, the MG HS is one of the cheapest cars of its kind.”

The MG HS plug-in hybrid took the top spot, with the experts praising its luxurious interior, generous equipment, and impressive 75-mile electric range.

They noted: “Don’t think that just because you’re paying a bargain price means it’ll feel cheaper inside, either. In fact, the GS is easily a match for the more expensive Citroen C5 Aircross in terms of plushness. It’s well equipped too.”

The Volkswagen Passat estate secured second place, with the experts highlighting its practicality and superiority over rivals from BMW and Citroen.

With a list price of £47,430, they praised its spacious boot and high-quality interior.

They added: “Despite carrying around a hefty battery, you’ll get more into the Passat’s boot than you would in most estate rivals, while the interior mixes soft touch surfaces with high quality plastics in a way that puts the [Mercedes] C-Class to shame.”

The Range Rover Sport, with a list price of £114,050, took third place, boasting a luxurious and efficient driving experience.

The experts noted: “This version of the Range Rover Sport is as on trend for the wealthy as shopping at Erewhon, combing luxury with efficiency.

“As with every Range Rover Sport, you get to enjoy the view from a driving position that places you high above the road, while your passengers relax in sumptuous comfort.”
