Co-op offers customers ‘thank you’ discount on £40 shop | UK | News

Co-op is offering its members a 25% discount on a £40 shop as a way of saying ‘thank you’ for putting up with days of cyber-attack disruption. The supermarket was hit by a major cyberattack, which temporarily left shelves bare and disrupted payments.

The retailer also said the hackers stole members’ personal data, such as names and contact details. At the time, Co-op was forced to shut down some of its systems, which caused significant disruption across its retail chain and led to availability issues across its stores.  The chain became the latest in a number of retailers who have been hit by a raft of cyber attacks in recent months.

It came just days M&S faced a serious incident of a similar nature which is believed may cost the retailer around £300million.

Co-op has now launched a week-long initiative “express gratitude” for its six and a half million members, as its 2,300 stores near full recovery.

The offer runs from June 18 and 24, members will be able to get 25% off when spending £40 in-store, saving £10 on their shop.

The offer will also be available to new customers who join as members.

Co-op managing director of food Matt Hood said: “I’m very proud that, thanks to the work of our colleagues, we are very near to making a full and complete recovery from the recent cyber-attack on our Co-op, and I’m delighted to see our stores looking back to normal and being able to serve our shoppers and communities.

“We are so grateful to our member owners for their support and patience with us during what was a very difficult time and hope this gesture of appreciation goes a little way to showing them our thanks, with more value rewards to come over the summer.”
