An American has revealed the one change he would make to the full English breakfast after sampling the classic dish for the first time. US native Kalani visited Blues Café Bar in Swindon to sample the meal and said he would make one change to “level it up”.
The breakfast came with all the trimmings – including eggs, bacon, sausages, tomato, beans and mushrooms – as well as extras like French toast, black pudding and onion rings. He shared a taste test video on his TikTok channel @kalanighosthunter, and while he agreed the dish is good as it is, he rated it an 8.3 out of 10. However, he only gave a five for the black pudding.
“It’s just not my favourite – five out of 10,” Kalani declared after sampling the black pudding. “I like the flavour of it, maybe it’s just a consistency thing I’m not a big fan of.”
He sampled the sausage next, nodding his approval and saying it was “tasty.” He then added a huge amount of brown sauce to his plate and a big spoonful of beans to his toast.
The tester was shocked by the difference in both taste and appearance between English and American bacon: “This is a lot different from the US. I wouldn’t say I like it better than my US bacon. I like the crispy bacon back home, but this has a lot of really good flavour.”
Summing up the dish, he said: “I really like this meal. it’s very homey like a comfort meal. I can see why you guys love this meal, good flavour, good variants too.”
Kalani then proceeded to share his favourite part of the dish and what improvements he would make.
“The beans and toast might be my favourite part of this entire thing. I think my next evolution will be to [add] cheese on top of that.”
However, commenters were quick to tell the TikToker to go elsewhere to sample the iconic breakfast dish. One user said: “You need to go to Scotland and try a Scottish breakfast with haggis.”
Another user added: “It angers me that cafes always serve rubbery nearly raw bacon, born and bred Brit but I think USA bacon solos purely because it’s at least crisp.”
A third user said: “When black pudding is done right it’s the best thing on the plate.”
