The Swan, a Grade-II listed timber-framed pub – believed to date back to the 17th century – has undergone clever renovations that preserve its historic charm while introducing contemporary elements to the build. The addition of a glazed conservatory housing a new bar and dining area has been designed to contrast with the original structure – creating a striking visual appeal.
The non-profit organisation CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale), which has been “campaigning for pubs, pints and people since 1971”, has named the Swan as the winner of 2025’s Pub Design Award. Nestled nearby the River Stour, punters can enjoy a tipple in riverside gardens and pretty surroundings. Plus, the Swan offers a range of cask beers, Belgian and craft ales to its customers.
Due to its design, the Swan was honoured with the Historic England Conservation Award by CAMRA in collaboration with Historic England.
Judges praised the pub for its successful integration of a modern extension with the historic timber frame, adding that the Swan has been crowned as the “most stunning, historically significant and beautifully resotored pub across the UK”.
Situated within the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the pub can be found in the pretty village of Stratford St Mary in Suffolk.
The village boasts a rich history going back all the way to 4000BC – with many historic buildings listed for their architectural interest.
Within the village, nature-lovers are able to wander along trails, including the Stour Valley Path, to explore nearby countryside.
And keen fishers can obtain permits for fishing along the river; specifically, the area permitted is between the Weir and the River Garden.
If travellers are doing a pit-stop in Suffolk, the charming Swan pub within the idyllic village of Stratford St Mary should be on everyone’s radar.
The Swan, opened from Wednesdays to Sundays, also offers a changing menu throughout the year. Expect to taste “rustic, earthy food” alongside “world class beers and gorgeous wines”, the Swan notes.
