Heinz beaten in tomato ketchup test – £1 sauce tops the list

A taste test of various ketchups has revealed that a £1 one is just as good as Heinz. Ketchup is a staple in most British fridges and is enjoyed with things like chips and a full English breakfast. A test has compared a total of eight bottles of tomato sauce, including Heinz and supermarket own-brand versions. While Heinz is the market leader, there are plenty of other options for customers, some of which might be much better value than the branded bottle.

Heinz is clearly the most popular ketchup brand in the UK, according to Statista. However, supermarkets put up a good fight when it comes to competing with the iconic ketchup brand. The taste test found that one cheap ketchup bottle stood up to Heinz in terms of taste and value. Batt’s Ketchup, which is sold in Lidl stores across the UK, scored the highest.

The test was carried out by The Sun’s Rosie Taylor. She said: “This Lidl ketchup was a great copy of Heinz. It was packed full of tomato taste and had a good balance of sweet and vinegar flavours.”

However, she did say that vinegar fell out of the bottle when she first opened it and squirted some out, but that the texture was fine after she shook it. She concluded that it is a close second place to Heinz and great value at 19p per 100g, which is less than a third of the price.

She gave Batt’s a 9 out of 10 in terms of taste and the same score when it came for value for money, so it received 18 out of 20 in total. She gave Heinz a 10 out of 10 flavour score, but it fell short when it came to value for money, getting a 5 out of 10 score because it is “four times more expensive” than a supermarket version of ketchup.

She also tried own-brand ketchups from Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s and Aldi. While Lidl’s version came out on top, others proved to score relatively high compared to Heinz.

Morrison’s ketchup received a taste score of 8 out of 10. Others scored quite low, such as Tesco Tomato Ketchup which only got 4 out of 10 when it came to taste, the lowest ranked on the list.

Other low scorers include Asda Classic Tomato Ketchup and Sainsbury’s Tomato Ketchup, both of which scored 5 out of 10 when it came to taste.
