This person has amassed a huge fortune at an impressive £11.3 billion, making him the richest person in Africa. With this amount of money, the billionaire has created a museum showcasing 200 of his cars. The wealthy individual has a Cape Town mansion worth an estimated £1.5 million.

South African billionaire Johann Rupert is now Africa’s richest person, according to the latest data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Rupert controls Richemont which is one of the world’s largest luxury goods firms.

The company owns brands like Cartier and Montblanc – these successful brands have contributed towards Rupert’s wealth.

Founded by his father Anton Rupert Richemont. It is the third largest luxury goods company on the planet behind only LVMH and Estée Lauder, according to Deloitte’s 2019 report on Global Powers of Luxury Goods.

Rupert inherited the company from his father, becoming CEO in 2000. He was named as the 147th richest globally in 2024.

Due to strong performances in the luxury goods sector, Rupert’s wealth has grown.

He lives in Cape Town, where he owns a huge mansion but the billionaire also has properties in Geneva and London.

After taking over the farm in 2003 Rupert constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, catapulting the farm into a prestigious wine estate and sprawling enterprise.

The Estate houses two tasting rooms, four state-of-the-art cellars, a beautiful rose garden and wonderful vineyards.

Rupert owns 7% of diversified investment firm Remgro, which he chairs, as well as 27% of Reinet, an investment holding company based in Luxembourg.

According to Forbes, he has been a vocal opponent of plans to allow fracking in the Karoo, a region of South Africa where he owns land.

The 75-year-old billionaire has three children and is married to Gaynor Rupert.
