You may well know the story. You save money, book your holidays and buy a plane ticket to a destination you’ve been wanting to visit for years. But at the airport, an unexpected surprise changes your dream holiday into a nightmare. Your passport expires in less than six months, and this will prevent you from travelling to your destination. The scenario is far from uncommon. One in five (21%) Brits have had to get their passport renewed within a few weeks of travelling, according to a 2024 research by the financial services comparison platform Confused.com.
To prevent this, His Majesty’s (HM) Passport Office issued an alert on its official X account on Thursday, urging British passport holders to act immediately and check their passport expiry date.
The post reads: “Did you know that some countries require your passport to be valid for several months after your scheduled return date? Check your passport expiry date today!” An accompanying link directs travellers to the Foreign Office website, which details information for visits to some 226 countries and territories.
For most international travel, passports need to have at least six months of validity remaining from your planned return date. For example, those travelling to Dubai or other UAE destinations require passports to remain valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry. British passport holders on their way to Turkey need to have an expiry date at least 150 days post-arrival and one blank page available.
Some countries, particularly within the Schengen area, require only three months of validity beyond your intended departure date. A post-Brexit passport rule adds that those planning to enter the Schengen zone with a UK passport must ensure the date of issue is less than 10 years from the date of arrival. So, although the official validity of your passport may be beyond 10 years, the EU does not recognise these extra months if your passport is older than 10 years on the date that you enter the EU.
Similarly, strict rules apply to non-British travellers entering the UK, who need a passport that is valid for a minimum of six months from their intended date of entry.
