5 trees that grow ‘exceptionally well’ in pots and are perfect for small gardens

Planting large and luscious trees at home isn’t only for those with vast amounts of outside space. Many actually thrive in pots and containers, meaning everyone can enjoy the benefits of trees in their garden.

Those who have balconies and patios can also get involved, with a small selection of small and dwarf species to choose from. But gardeners shouldn’t wait to get started if they want any blooms this summer, with a few of the best ones shared by an expert. From citrus trees to raspberries, here’s what you can grow in containers.

1. Citrus trees

An expert from elho said: “Citrus trees, including lemons and oranges, do exceptionally well in pots.

“These Mediterranean species love the sun, so make sure they’re placed in a bright location that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight.

“In the summer, citrus trees need watering around once a week, and good drainage is important, so they do not become waterlogged.”

While a bit fussy, citrus plants will reward attentive owners with fragrant white flowers, glossy green leaves, as well as delicious fruits.

2. Japanese maple

Also known as acers, Japanese maples make a beautiful and ornamental addition to any garden or balcony.

The expert said: “These deciduous trees are mostly slow-growing, so are ideal for growing in well-suited pots. It is recommended to choose a pot that is about double the size of the root system so that it has plenty of space to establish.

“They are simple to care for, but make sure the pot has sufficient drainage to avoid root damage, and that the soil does not dry out.”

3. Snowy mespilus

Also known as a Juneberry, this shrubby tree is a fantastic, decorative option to plant in pots.

The pro explained: “In early spring, you can expect elegant blooms of white blossom and abundance of delicious, apple-flavoured berries in the summer.

“After the summer passes, the leaves turn russet and boast a vibrant autumn hue.

“The perfect, small-scale tree for long-lasting colour. These trees are also hardy and tolerant of most conditions, but for best results, find a spot with full sun, keep the soil moist and avoid overwatering.”

4. Raspberries

Raspberries can be successfully grown in pots, particularly smaller, compact varieties.

To ensure success, choose a large pot, use a well-draining soil mix and provide adequate sunlight and water.

5. Blueberries

Blueberries can also be grown in pots, making them a great option for smaller gardens if you have little space.

Make sure to use acidic soil, provide plenty of light, as well as water.
