Houseplants are the perfect way to breathe some colour and life into your home. And you don’t need to be a green-fingered expert in order to care for them – there are plenty of low-maintenance options out there to choose from.

You also don’t need a large home flooded with natural light if you want to add some houseplants to your space. According to the plant pros at Beards and Daises, there are five excellent options that thrive even in small flats. Whether you’ve got a bright bay window, a shaded nook, or just a spare shelf, these plants are chosen for their low-maintenance nature, compact growth, and interior style appeal.

Best houseplants for flats

1. Fiddle leaf fig

This dramatic leafy plant loves bright, indirect sunlight, making it perfect for sunny flats.

Its bold, sculptural leaves make it a favourite for adding height and texture to interiors. It pairs well with clean lines, neutral tones, and statement planters, ideal for modern living spaces.

If you have an open-plan living rooms, any empty corners or tall windows, then this is the plant for you.

2. Snake plant

Snake plants are almost indestructible. According to the experts, they thrive on neglect, can tolerate low light, and only need watering every couple of weeks – so they are ideal for plant beginners.

Their architectural, upright leaves bring a bold, modern aesthetic to any room. They are perfect for minimalist interiors, small bedrooms, or office corners, as well as low-light areas like hallways.

3. Aloe vera

Not only does this striking plant thrive in sunny spots, it’s also useful if you’ve got any skin irritation. Simply break off one of the leaves and use the gel inside to sooth your skin.

It’s a well-known fact that natural wellness is having a moment, and aloe vera ticks both of those health and style boxes.

Kitchen windowsills, sunny bathrooms, or any south-facing ledge is perfect for an aloe vera plant, and it doesn’t need to be a big space either.

4. Pothos

This gorgeous plant is fast-growing, can tolerate a range of light conditions, and looks amazing cascading from shelves or hanging baskets.

It’s perfect if you have limited floor space, as you can just hang it from a hook or place it on any spare shelf you might have.

5. Rubber plant

These adapt well to indoor environments, prefer bright indirect light, and only need watered from time to time – so ideal for those of us with busy lives.

Their glossy, oversized leaves and dark foliage complement both contemporary and boho interiors. However, they look best when paired with a statement planter in the corner of your living room or workspace.
