The first trailer for 28 Years Later 2, The Bone Temple, will be released tomorrow, ahead of the sequel’s cinematic release on January 16.
The original film concluded with Spike being discovered by the Jimmys, a cult of eccentric and violent survivors all dressed like the late abuser Jimmy Savile.
It’s worth noting that in the 28 Days Later universe, the truth of the paedophile celebrity’s crimes was never made public as the Rage virus broke out in 2002.
Danny Boyle, who directed the first film, has teased that the second movie of the new trilogy (helmed by Nia DaCosta), will explore the nature of evil.
Now Jack O’Connell, who stars as cult leader Sir Jimmy Crystal, has teased the film and his villainous character.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, O’Connell said: “This film is the weird, deranged cousin to 28 Years Later, who you might be a bit ashamed of because they have weird, questionable interests. We see how much nature is the unstoppable force at the end of the day. Nature prevails. The world will take its natural course with or without humans. But I don’t think the infected are purely antagonists in our film. It definitely will make you consider that.”
On his “extremely dark and twisted” Jimmy, he teased: “We’re in an apocalyptic world, and evil and darkness are two of the forces that have been able to still exist, and he revels in them.”
O’Connell added: “We definitely take him on a journey of twisted gaiety. That is what I was searching for when playing him: twisted gaiety.”
The film’s director shared: “You get to see more of what it means for the Jimmies to all be dressed the same and for them to be called the Jimmies, the cult of personality he’s created around himself.”
Cillian Murphy’s 28 Days Later character Jim, will cameo in the film at the end ahead of starring in 28 Years Later 3, which Boyle will return to direct.
