Two Alabama firefighters were shot while on duty at a fire station in Birmingham Wednesday in what police are investigating as a possible “targeted attack,” authorities said.
Around 8:30 a.m. local time, the Birmingham Police Department responded to a report of two Birmingham Fire Department firefighters being shot at Fire Station #9, officer Truman Fitzgerald said in a video posted on Facebook.
Birmingham fire and rescue personnel arrived at the scene and transported the two firefighters to a nearby hospital, Fitzgerald said.
“They have suffered serious injuries,” Fitzgerald said. “We have no one in custody.”
Police investigating whether shooting was a ‘targeted attack’
In a news conference Wednesday, Police Chief Scott Thurmond said police are investigating whether the shooting was a “targeted attack.”
“We don’t know why it would be a targeted attack but that’s one of the things that we’re trying to determine at this point in time,” Thurmond said.
