'10/10' war drama hailed 'the best' leaves Netflix fans stunned into silence

Historical dramas are some of the most gripping and tense shows available for TV lovers who want some escapism. From fantasy thrillers to medieval battles that feature some of the bloodiest encounters, there is always something for everyone. One historical film available to Netflix users is the perfect action drama to sink your teeth into if you love the Scottish Wars of Independence. Outlaw King, which stars Chris Pine and Florence Pugh, was released in 2018 and centres around the legendary warrior Robert the Bruce. Whilst fans might look at it as a sequel to the Hollywood movie Braveheart, the film does detail Scotland’s fight for liberation from King Edward I of England’s rule.

The IMDb synopsis teases: “A true David vs. Goliath story of how the 14th century Scottish ‘Outlaw King’ Robert the Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat the much larger and better equipped occupying English army.”

One user left a positive review, saying: “One of the better Netflix movies I’ve seen! I was told this is worth watching, and it was. Basically a continued story after Braveheart, this was well done and had good battle scenes and emotion.”

A second person commented: “An epic in grand proportions, Outlaw King is a thoroughly enthralling film which manages to keep historical inaccuracies to a minimum whilst still being intense and exciting.”

A third chimed in: “I am delighted to add another 10/10 to my list which is a rare occasion. The filmography (check) of this movie is enough to see it, beautiful sets and scenery. Add a fabulous real life underdog story(check), great acting(check) and you have a delightful movie.”

A fourth echoed: ” Outlaw King is fantastic, and one of the best @netflix original films out there.”

A critic from The Telegraph left a review at the time of its release, declaring: “For pure David Lean-grade heft and sweep, David Mackenzie’s Outlaw King is as big as anything you’ll find in a cinema this year.”

Nigel Andrews from The Financial Times said: “Outlaw King is a fair stab – all puns intended – at the Robert the Bruce story.” David Fear from Rolling Stone commented: “Mackenzie knows that a personal connection – not just love of country, but love itself – can ground a sweeping story even when it stumbles.”

Outlaw King can be streamed on Netflix.
