Your iPhone is getting a huge free upgrade – the best 5 feature coming soon

It’s been a big week for Apple. The US technology giant has just announced the launch of iOS 26 at its WWDC Developers Conference, which will transform the look and add swathes of new features to millions of iPhones. This blockbuster boost won’t arrive on devices until the autumn, but Express.co.uk has been lucky enough to go hands-on with this new operating system, and there’s plenty to look forward to. As long as you have an iPhone 11 or later in your pocket, you’ll be able to download it for free. Here’s our top 5 features that you can look forward to trying out when iOS 26 is finally released to the masses.

A new look

Perhaps one of the most noticeable changes when you upgrade to iOS 26 is the new look, which Apple is calling Liquid Glass. It does pretty much what it says on the tin, with menus, apps, and interactions getting a glossy appearance that really does look like you’re looking through…errr, glass. The update is subtle at the times, but it certainly refreshes things and adds a modern twist to the on-screen appearance.

The Liquid Glass update also brings new customisation options to your app icons and widgets, plus there’s a stunning, clear look which makes your apps blend seamlessly with the background.

2. End of cold callers

If you are fed up with those annoying cold calls then iOS 26 is worth installing. Apple has added a new feature in this release called Call Screening which won’t let unknown numbers pester you until the person on the phone confirms who they are.

A message then appears on the display letting you know why they are ringing you – it’s then up to you if you let the call come through.  With so many of us pestered by firms – along with the worry of scammers – this coud be one of the most useful updates in the whole of iOS 26.

There are some other neat updates, including Hold Assist, which lets you know when someone at the call centre finally answers the phone.

The Messages app will also check unknown numbers and place texts in a separate spam-style folder.

3. A more dynamic Lock Screen

We all love our lock screens, and now things are getting even more interactive.

Firstly, the much-loved clock will fluidly adapt to the available space on the display with it changing depending on the image and what notifications pop up.

Spatial scenes can also be added in the Photos app which then bring wallpapers to life thanks to a clever 3D effect when users move the iPhone.

Having seen this in the flesh it works really well and makes those family photos on the lock screen look far more exciting.

4. Going abroad will be easier

If you head abroad and don’t speak the lingo, iOS 26 will offer some help. It can translate both calls and texts in real time so you can hear and see exactly what is being said.

“Live Translation is integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone to help users communicate across languages, translating text and audio on the fly,” Apple explained.

Having used it in a demo it was pretty seamless and could definitely get you out of some sticky situations when heading away.

5. Messages gets a boost

A nice update is coming Messages in iOS 26. The boost offers enhancements to conversations, including custom backgrounds and the ability to create instant polls in group chats.

With Apple Intelligence, Messages can even detect when a poll might come in handy and suggest one, and users can generate unique backgrounds that fit their conversation with Image Playground.

Additionally, in group chats, users can now see typing indicators, and request, send, and receive Apple Cash.
