Will & Grace feud: Debra Messing and Megan Mullally keep their distance at latest episode taping

Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Megan Mullally looked frosty as they taped the sitcom’s latest episode in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening, amid claims a feud between the pair has killed off the series.

Debra, 51, and Megan, 60, kept their distance from each other in a new video posted to the show’s official Instagram grid, just hours after it emerged a fall-out between the pair was responsible for the show being cancelled at the end of its 11th season.

The pair – who play Grace Adler and Karen Walker on the rebooted NBC series –  were joined on set by Eric McCormack as the group welcomed the studio audience ahead of the taping.

Sean Hayes was absent – for unknown reasons – and was replaced with a cardboard cut out as they welcomed the excited crowd.

As Eric and Megan larked around at one side of the stage, Debra was seen shooting them a brief stare before heading over to hug the cardboard Sean.

Eric then ran to join her but Megan kept her distance, staying at the opposite end of the stage away from Debra.

Clearly trying to be professional, Debra coaxed Megan over to kiss the cardboard cut out, but the women barely looked at one another.

Although it’s not known what the plot of the upcoming season is yet, the characters of Grace and Karen often appear in one-on-one scenes and are close friends as well as colleagues on the show – which is bound to make filming awkward if rumours of a rift are accurate.

Reps for the stars declined to comment when approached by MailOnline on Wednesday.

Suspicion was first stirred among fans after the ladies unfollowed each other on Instagram, and posted cryptic messages about ‘people who aren’t good for you’.

And further back still, another appeared, stating: ‘You can meet somebody tomorrow who has better intentions for you than someone you’ve known forever. Time means nothing, character does.’

She then captioned this: ‘Okay what I get from this goes a little something like this: not everyone is going to be in your corner. It’s okay to let go of relationships that aren’t healthy and positive, even with people you’ve known for years and once trusted.

‘There are other people on the planet. Look for friendships that are genuine, kind, supportive, and reciprocal. avoid those who have betrayed, bullied, or abused you in the past. They don’t have your best intentions at heart.’

Another of Megan’s Instagrams featured the slogan: ‘Stop romanticizing the people who hurt you!’

She captioned this: ‘Currently obsessed with this quote. You know how certain things resonate with you at certain times? And this is of course applicable not just in romantic relationships. Work, family, and friendships also apply.’

More recently, Megan penned a now-deleted Instagram story which stated: ‘One of the best feelings is finally losing your attachment to somebody who isn’t good for you!’

In addition, she posted: ‘Don’t ask people for directions if they’ve never been where you’re going!’

Debra, meanwhile, uploaded a post a few weeks ago, urging fans to vote for Will & Grace for the Emmys, but failed to tag Megan. She tagged everyone in the post – including the series’ director James Burrows and co-creator Max Mutchnick – except the actress.

Both women still follow their co-stars Sean Hayes and Eric McCormack, who follow them in return, on social media.

When the show’s team announced that the 11th season of Will & Grace would be the last, their statement read: ‘We think of the Will & Grace episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis — 51 is not enough, 53 is too many. That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season of Will & Grace.’

It appears that NBC didn’t choose to cancel the show – with ratings being notably high – and that those on the production have made that call, upsetting fans even further.

Those that noticed Megan and Debra’s Instagram unfollowing took to social media themselves to share their concerns over the matter.

One wrote: ‘I am seriously struggling to understand the drama that has ensued between the W&G cast members over the last few days. As much as I’m eager to know what happened, I’m trying to refrain from speculation.

‘I don’t want to jump to conclusions about their friendship (especially since very little information is public). I’m sure we’ll all get the answers that we seek eventually. I just hope they are all okay.’

Another tweeted: ‘Debra Messing and Megan Mullally are no longer friends – my life is falling apart!’

The Will & Grace cast were first thrown together when the show began in 1998, with Debra playing the titular role of interior designer Grace and Megan her alcoholic assistant Karen.

The show ran originally until 2006 for eight seasons before coming to a close; but it was rebooted in 2017 after the cast reunited to film a promotional short for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2016.

This was so well-received, NBC re-commissioned the sitcom for a comeback, returning for a ninth season in 2017.

Two further seasons were commissioned following the success of this, but it was announced last month that the 11th season would be the last.

Fans are now concerned that Debra and Megan’s fall out is the reason.

When the principal cast returned to screens in 2017, they revealed to fans that they hadn’t socialised as a quartet since the series came to a close in 2006, but that they had always been friends.

They gushed about reuniting for the election short – which was put out online only – claiming that their chemistry resurfaced as soon as they were back together.

This was evident in the finished video, leading to NBC’s decision to reboot.

As the past two seasons have gone on, there’s been no sign of any fractiousness between the cast, with the unfollowing between Debra and Megan coming as a major shock.

The cast are often seen on each other’s social media accounts in behind-the-scenes videos and photos, having a whale of a time, always supporting one another’s endeavors.
