Weeds will vanish from lawns if sprayed with one kitchen item

Garden weeds are intrusive plants that compete with flowers, vegetables, and grass for essential nutrients, water, and sunlight. Some frequently encountered weeds include dandelions, bindweed, nettles, and clover. If not removed in a timely manner, those can impact the overall health of your green space.

However, one common kitchen ingredient is highly effective against weeds and can be found in most British households. According to Martha Stewart’s website, household vinegar contains acetic acid, which can effectively get rid of weeds. Rebecca Sears, chief marketing officer at Green Garden, said: “The acid within vinegar breaks down cell walls and removes moisture from weeds, causing them to die off.”

She added: “Vinegars that you keep in your kitchen, such as white vinegar, contain a level of acidity that can help remove weeds.”

Applying vinegar weed killer effectively requires timing and proper conditions to maximise its impact while minimising unwanted effects.

However, gardening experts have advised using the weed killer solution carefully. Experts from Sloane & Sons explained: “Using homemade weed killer in the UK is non-discriminative, meaning it targets any plant it touches. For best results, spray the mixture on a sunny, dry day, ensuring all parts of the weed are covered.

“Typically, plants treated with this solution perish within a week. It’s crucial to note that in high quantities, this solution can be harmful beyond just plants. The mix of salt and vinegar can be toxic to small animals. Moreover, it can disrupt the soil’s natural balance. Avoid direct spills on the ground.

“If treating a large weed-infested area, consider a follow-up with soil nourishment and hydration to restore its health. Store any remaining solution in a sealed, labelled container in a cool, shaded place for future use.”
