‘Urgent’ summer task for gardeners with hydrangeas, roses and peonies

As the summer heat intensifies, it’s not just us who suffer but also our cherished hydrangeas. These garden beauties known for their vibrant foliage and blooms can find the sweltering weather a real challenge.

David Denyer from Eflorist warns that even brief spells of extreme temperatures can “cause lasting damage to plants”. Fear not, as the florist has divulged several “life-saving” gardening hacks to ensure your hydrangeas “survive even the most intense summer heat”. And it’s not only hydrangeas that will reap the benefits; these tips are equally effective for roses, peonies, begonias, and freshly planted bedding flowers.

When to water hydrangeas

David advised that one of the key actions gardeners should take is to water their hydrangeas at two critical times of the day.

“Water before 9am or after 7pm. Midday sun evaporates water quickly and can even scorch foliage,” he said. “Morning watering is ideal. It gives the soil time to absorb the moisture before heat sets in.”

When temperatures soar, it’s crucial for gardeners to dedicate a mere five minutes to this task.

How to water hydrangeas

In addition to timing, the method of watering is also key. Gardeners should aim to water their hydrangeas “deeply and slowly”.

The florist explained: “Surface watering doesn’t cut it. Focus on slow, deep watering at the base of plants. For containers, make sure water reaches the roots by soaking the soil thoroughly.”

This technique encourages roots to delve deeper into the soil, bolstering the plant’s resilience against drought conditions.

Garden enthusiasts can enhance their hydrangeas’ hydration and soil temperature regulation by adding a layer of mulch around the base. Organic options such as wood chips or straw are most effective.

3. Create shade to protect your plants

The plant expert’s third tip is to provide shade for hydrangeas whenever feasible.

This could mean relocating potted plants to shaded areas like patios, beneath trees, or behind taller vegetation, or employing garden fleece, parasols, or even an old sheet to protect the delicate blooms throughout the day.

For those planning a getaway this weekend, there are measures you can take to safeguard your flowers. Ensure you water your garden thoroughly on the evening before departure, as “saturated soil retains moisture longer”.

As previously mentioned, apply a generous layer of mulch (be it bark, straw, or compost) around the base of your plants to help maintain moisture levels and control soil temperature.
