The Handmaid’s Tale season 3: June's devastating death revealed in huge clue you missed?
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale season three, episode eight.
For the past two seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, June (played by Elisabeth Moss) has been almost untouchable as she has managed to escape death despite trying to flee Gilead and helping baby Nichole get to Canada with Emily (Alexis Bledel).
However, in episode seven of season three, one fan has noticed a shocking clue which hints at the death of June.
Following the death of Frances (Ordena Stephens) in Under His Eye, June was seen delivering the news that she had been hanged.
And one fan has suggested this is how June will die as they analysed the way in which June revealed her passing.
Redditor elektrikat shared a snap of June standing in her red dress and white hat with her arms folded.
The words “Frances is dead” can be seen written below her in the screenshot.
But what really caught the attention of the fan was the light, which was hanging behind the handmaid.
elektrikat wrote: “The zoom on this plan leaves the cord of the chandelier exposed behind June, looking like a noose while she muses about Frances’s death.
“A detail both cool and unsettling in a show that leaves nothing to chance.”
Another fan agreed noting chandeliers have been used to reference death in the first season of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Dinobrainiak shared: “I just happened to be rereading the pilot script and I recall that they removed the chandelier from the handmaid’s room at the Waterfords’ because that’s how the first handmaid hung herself. This is also true in the book.”
Furthermore, June has previously had a noose put around her neck in the season two premiere when all of the handmaids were taken to a football stadium and told they would die.
Fortunately no one was hung but it is a preferred way of killing traitors in Gilead.
With June so set on trying to take down Gilead it seems likely she won’t survive for much longer – will she be hanged like Frances?
Many fans are certain June will be killed as in the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, details of the handmaid’s experience are read out at an academic conference.
In the novel, June’s story ends in Canada in the year 2195, about 200 years after the events of book.
Her experience is documented in a series of tapes, recorded over others, detailing what has happened to her in Gilead.
Fans will know June sent a message to her husband Luke (O. T. Fagbenle) in season three, episode five, which she recorded over one of the mix tapes Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) had made for his wife at the start of their romance.
With the tapes being uncovered many years later, does this confirm the handmaid will die in Gilead?
The Handmaid’s Tale continues tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.
