Rats and mice are likely to be seen within homes during the summer months as they search for food and shelter. Not being prepared for this and ignoring any early signs can quickly lead to rats throughout your home.
According to Glen Peskett, DIY expert from Saxton Blades, getting rid of the pests can be expensive, but there is a kitchen staple you can try to use first. The expert said: “Garlic is a favourite all around the world, it smells amazing, has health benefits and transforms any dish you put it in.
“But for rats? That strong, pungent smell is their absolute nightmare.
“Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate and find food. Garlic, with its strong sulfur compounds, overwhelms their sense of smell and makes them feel disoriented.
“These compounds are also something rats associate with toxic substances, naturally deterring them from entering your home.”
To use garlic around your home, place cloves around entry points where rodents are likely to poke their nose in.
They tend to be attracted to areas like basements, garages, kitchens and even the loft.
Be sure to place them near any cracks and doorways around the outside of your home.
The expert added: “Admittedly, you might look like you’re trying to keep vampires away, but if you’re ok with your neighbours possibly suspecting you have lost the plot, it’s a truly fantastic solution.”
However, there are a few other options to try if you don’t fancy garlic cloves lying around everywhere.
This includes garlic oil, which can be used on cotton wool balls and placed around the home.
The expert also recommended cayenne pepper, which rats absolutely hate as it irritates their nose and mouth.
Apple cider vinegar can also be used as a deterrent thanks to its “pungent, acidic scent”.
Simply soak a cotton ball and place it in areas where rats might enter.
