ARE you finding it harder to make your salary stretch to the end of the month?

If so, you are not alone because on average we fork out an extra £150 a year on household bills in comparison to last year, according to comparison site MoneySuperMarket.

See how you can cut costs and make your salary stretch with the help of home management expert Richard Longmore[/caption]

So, I spoke to Richard Longmore from home management website for his tips to stretch this month’s pay packet . . .

Assess essentials: Richard’s top tip is to “look at your monthly outgoings and assess which are essential and which could be replaced or cancelled”.

Instead of splashing out on a gym membership, try home workouts or take up running.

My tip: Get outdoors and look up your local Park Run — it’s free. If you have a streaming subscription such as Netflix, Richard suggests “partnering up with friends or family to cut back on the cost”.

Don’t be loyal: Check your bills. Richard says: “Compare prices online at a site like to see if changing your supplier for energy, TV, broadband and mobile provider could be a cheaper alternative.”

My tip: Always check to see if you can get cashback on top of any deal you find. It’s always worth finding out.

Bulk buy: Eating out for lunch is an easy option but can also put a big dent in your wallet.

According to Richard “buying a loaf of bread and sandwich ingredients will work out at a cheaper weekly cost than store-bought lunches every day”.

My tip: Cook extra at dinner time, pot the leftovers up and take it to work for lunch during the week.

Use your legs: Using public transport can cost pounds. Where possible, see if you can walk some of your route.

Richard says: “Not only will this change help you save on outgoings but getting outside also provides mental health benefits”.

My tip: If you have to use public transport, try getting off a stop earlier and walk the remaining distance. Not only is this good for you but it should save you money, too.
