Stranger Things season 4: Billy Hargrove saved Hawkins in Karen Wheeler clue you missed?
Billy (played by Dacre Montgomery) was a flawed Stranger Things character to say the least.
Season three of the Netflix favourite saw Billy’s poolside scenes charged with sexual chemistry as he and Mike’s (Finn Wolfhard) mother Mrs Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) clearly had eyes for each other.
They even set a date and time to meet up in a motel but Mrs Wheeler decided she couldn’t go through with it last minute.
However, before Billy got to their meeting spot himself, his car lost control and found himself in the clutches of the Mind Flayer.
From then on, Billy was controlled by the beast as it set about using him to posses more residents of Hawkins.
But one fan has pointed to what could be a crucial moment early on in the series where he manages to defy the Mind Flayer.
When Billy returned to work at the pool Karen cornered him to apologise for not turning up to their date, believing he’d arrived and thought she’d stood him up.
Billy thought about attacking the mother-of-three but managed to stop himself and warned her to get away from him.
Subsequently, one viewer has singled out this moment as one that significantly altered the direction the story could’ve taken.
They’ve pointed out that there could be many more fatalities if Billy hadn’t stood up to the Mind Flayer that first time.

Reddit user juiceistasty11 wrote: “This small moment was actually key to ensuring the Mind Flayer’s defeat. Imagine if Billy had gone along with the Mind Flayer’s plan and successfully kidnapped/flayed Karen.
“The logical next step would be to flay the rest of the Wheelers, and most importantly, Mike. Then, it would be pretty simple for the Mind Flayer to use Mike to trick Eleven and kill/flay her.
“Even without having Mike under his control, the Mind Flayer was nearly able to get Eleven, so with Mike on his side, I don’t think Eleven and the crew would’ve stood a chance.
“This moment was extremely pivotal for the Mind Flayer, and Billy’s resistance was absolutely essential for Eleven to ultimately win.”
Did Billy’s refusal to attack Karen result in him saving Hawkins?
Sadly, Billy met a more unfortunate fate after he died while thwarting the Mind Flayer.
He sacrificed himself to the monster so it couldn’t take Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) who had managed to get through to the heart throb by recalling one of his childhood memories with his mother.
While Billy’s death seems certain, many fans believe Jim Hopper (David Harbour) is really alive despite the Stranger Things gang thinking otherwise.
One big clue was revealed at the close of the last instalment as one Russian soldier revealed they were holding someone known as “The American” in a cell.
Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are streaming now on Netflix.
