As winter sets in, one problem is on the rise – the curse of a fogged windshield. It’s a mild irritation – but did you know it could also cost you?
Many drivers are unaware that driving with an obstructed view, whether caused by fogged up windows or ice, can result in a £100 fine and three points in their driving licence.
Luckily, there is a genius and cheap trick that can stop your windshield fogging up for good – all you need is a bit of shaving cream.
Liam Spencer from Northallerton Glass says: “The shaving foam adds a semi-permanent barrier to the windscreen, which prevents water droplets from forming.
“Although this barrier isn’t permanent and will need to be re-applied, it will make the windscreen less likely to become foggy.
“Driving with foggy windows or a foggy windshield can be dangerous as it reduces visibility and can increase the risk of accidents. If you do not have the time to slowly warm up the inside of your car to reduce the fog, shaving foam is a great, budget-friendly solution this winter if you do not want to invest in expensive, specialist products.”
Liam recommends the following method:
Spray a small amount of shaving foam onto a clean microfibre cloth.
Spread the shaving foam evenly across the inside of the windscreen. Wipe the surface of your windscreen with the cloth, ensuring that you have spread the shaving foam over the entire surface.
Using another clean microfibre cloth, wipe away all of the shaving foam.
There are specialist de-fogging products available, but these can be pricey, with an average cost of around £6, compared to just £1 for shaving foam.
If you do plan on using this trick, make sure that you’re using foam and not gel, as the gel will not have the same effect.
It’s also wise to make sure that the shaving foam doesn’t touch the paintwork of your car as it can damage it.
