Pretty UK town that comes alive with magical Christmas market | UK | Travel

A timeless Christmas market and late-night shopping event is happening at one of the most-visited counties in the UK. This December you’ll be spoilt for choice as Christmas rolls out at a stunning location for all the family to enjoy.

Devon and Cornwall are top of the list for tourism in the summer, but autumn and winter offers a more peaceful retreat to these parts – and instead of hitting the beach visitors can savour the magic of Christmas markets in the South West. One Devon spot sees its streets “filled with crowds” who come to enjoy the “old-fashioned traditional Christmas experience”. In Tavistock, a town surrounded by moorland, the town’s Dickensian Evening is a “magical late-night shopping event that transports you back in time” as shop keepers in the town “embrace the spirit and dress up in traditional attire”.

Tavistock’s Pannier Market becomes vibrant with festive scents and an array of gorgeous gifts, all being sold by independent traders, offering great Christmas shopping inspiration.

This historic market dates back hundreds of years to the year 1105 – and stall holders are friendly, they will happily talk you through their wares.

The town itself is also lined with independent shops and they all stay open late on Friday, December 5, 2025 – which is when the Tavistock Dickensian Evening takes place.

Visit Tavistock’s website described the event’s atmosphere: “The smell of chestnuts cooking on steam engines will waft through the streets bringing excitement to children and adults alike.

“Shops will be open late, and the town will come alive with entertainment on every corner.

“The streets are filled with crowds who come to enjoy the old-fashioned traditional Christmas experience.

“There will be stilt walkers, choirs, bands, street entertainers all performing throughout town. For children there’s an old-fashioned merry-go-round fairground ride and candy floss.”

Throughout the high street beautiful Christmas lights twinkle and there’s another delightful sight to enjoy amongst the shopping as Tavistock’s Annual Christmas Tree Festival takes place in the Parish Church of St. Eustachius.

Fringed by Dartmoor, there are numerous other places to visit around the charming town – and in Tavistock there’s much else to see while enjoying the festivities, the town is bordered by a pretty river with some gorgeous walks.

Tavistock is a bit different – and what’s more you can shop for something a bit different too, which is especially rewarding around Christmas time.

The market town has a nice chilled vibe, while at the same time boasting many cosy pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as places to stay, perfect for a festive break.
