‘Perfect’ UK beach with soft sand and warm water is ‘heaven on earth’ | UK | Travel

Step onto the sands of Viking Bay in Kent and you’re forgiven for thinking you’ve jet-setted into a Mediterranean holiday hotspot. With its curve of golden shoreline, a fleet of vibrant fishing vessels, and a splash of parasols colouring the scene, this bustling beach is an ideal choice for your next seaside excursion.

Located in the heart of Broadstairs within Thanet, the destination boasts an up-and-coming culinary culture sure to delight foodies, complemented by superior coffee that can be savoured in this quaint coastal town. Venturing upward from the bay reveals a treasure trove of cafes, bars, restaurants, and historic architecture waiting to be discovered. To perfect your beach day experience, Viking Bay offers sun loungers and parasols for hire, complete with showers to wash away the sandy remnants of a day well-spent by the sea.

Visitors have praised the bay and one admirer said: “If heaven was on earth. Maybe Broadstairs is just that place. Friendly people, miles and miles of golden sands and clean. Holiday in the UK and come here, its amazing,” reports Kent Live.

There’s an abundance of attractions to captivate visitors: a charming little pier arching into the waters, an active harbour where fishing boats glide out to sea, a cliff-top walk, a nostalgic wooden boardwalk, and Punch and Judy shows that promise entertainment for the entire family.

An ecstatic Tripadvisor reviewer said: “The best seaside town on the Kent coast. The beach is stunning. The rock pool is a big plus. There is a wonderful coffee shop on the beach in the arch. Perfect British beach!”

The sands are irresistibly soft, acclaimed as the gold standard for sandcastle architects.

Arrayed behind you, there’s a captivating backdrop of sun-kissed properties, emblematic stark white cliffs that stand as hallmarks of the Kentish coast in these parts, and, with the invigorating sea breeze invariably stirring appetites, a treasure trove of fish and chip outlets awaits, along with an abundance of other culinary delights to track down.

But one establishment stands out as a must-visit: Morelli’s, renowned for its heavenly array of ice creams, cakes, pastries, and warm beverages.

The Morelli family is steeped in the art of ice cream creation, having honed their craft for over a century now. With pride etched into every scoop, their gelato is celebrated far and wide.

A TripAdvisor user, contributing to Morelli’s impressive rating of 4.2 stars from an eye-catching total of 1,259 reviews, said: “A trip to Broadstairs isn’t complete without stopping in at Morelli’s for an ice cream regardless of the time of year.

“Whether you choose to sit down in the vintage restaurant or visit the take away counter both are excellent options. The wide range of flavours, the colours, tastes and textures are second to none. Remember to ask for the specials.”

And don’t skip the Viking Bay Cafe, which prides itself on serving hot and cold dishes freshly prepared on-site, alongside ice creams, refreshments, and boasting a full bar service.

On balmy days, laze under vibrant parasols at the Viking Bay Cafe, nursing your “ice cold Birra Moretti” – the quintessential Italian lager – and let time slip away in this breathtaking English riviera.

Extend your seaside bliss into the evening, as one visitor did, sharing: “Wonderful beach, then we had a lovely dinner with a sea view and drinks at a great pub, The 39 Steps just round the corner.”

Experience the comfort of reaching Viking Bay from above by taking a modern lift housed within an elegant tower. The lift, which was restored and modernised by Thanet District Council in 2021 for £17,000, operates seasonally.

Despite this, as reported by KentLive in April, there’s an ongoing campaign to have it available throughout the entire year.

Alternatively, access the bay using the steps or opt for the slope situated at the opposite end of the sands. Or perhaps choose a picturesque approach through the adjacent Louisa Bay?
