Helen Pierce (played by Janet McTeer) accompanied Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) to Mexico in the final moments of Ozark season three under the illusion the husband and wife duo were on their way to certain death. However, the tables soon turned when they touched down at cartel boss Omar’s (Felix Solis) residence as Nelson (Nelson Bonilla) instead took aim at the scheming lawyer.
Helen had spent the latter half of season three scheming the Byrdes out of the Navarro Cartel’s operation.
Putting her name onto their casino venture as well as sending mixed messages to the FBI on behalf of Marty, Helen was convinced she had done enough for Omar to take them out of the picture.
However, she couldn’t have been more wrong as Nelson shot her in the head shortly after they arrived to meet Omar in the final episode.
Marty and Wendy were left stunned by the murder as they froze covered in her blood – and the feeling was reciprocated by Netflix viewers the world over.

However, should Ozark fans have been expecting this cruel twist all along? One eagle-eyed fan appears to think so.
The foreshadowed Easter egg in question comes a few minutes earlier when Nelson accompanies the Byrdes onto the plane.
Marty was reluctant to board following a tense phone call with FBI Agent Maya Miller (Jessica Francis Dukes) who warned him to stay in the USA.
However, Nelson ushered him and Wendy up the steps where Helen was already sat waiting.
The Byrdes took their seat alongside them both while Nelson made his way to the back of the plane where Navarro’s children were playing.
On his way, however, Reddit user Impervious2All is convinced he gave away his true plans.
Under the thread ‘A cool theory from the S3 finale’, they state: “When I rewatched the finale, I noticed there was this awkward moment btwn Nelson and Helen when he walked by her to sit in the back of the plane away from her.
“She even looked back at him briefly but was so confident she’d nailed the Byrdes that she didn’t linger on the Nelson thing at all.
Could it be she had an inkling all along Nelson could turn on her?
Despite her death, fans may not have seen the last of Helen.
Speaking earlier this year ahead of the Emmy nominations being released, showrunner Chris Mundy and Bateman teased a possible comeback for the character via flashbacks.
Fans will have to wait for the fourth and final season to find out if McTeer will reprise the role.
Ozark seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix now.
