Toadie (played by Ryan Moloney) has been a staple on the Australian soap Neighbours for decades now, but his latest storyline may be the most difficult yet.
Finally happy, in love and married to the love of his life and mother of his child, in true soap fashion Sonya (Eve Morey) died and Toadie’s happiness was ripped away in one traumatic swoop.
Sonya discovered she had stage four ovarian cancer after initially only suffering from stomach pains.
It turned out the mother-of-one was poisoned with pesticide by the evil Alice Wells – Andrea Somers’ mother and nanny imposter on the soap.
Following a short battle with the disease, fans were heartbroken as they watched Toadie and Sonya said their goodbyes.
Sonya first arrived in Erinsborough 10 years ago, and last month marked the end of her story, but her legacy will be long-lasting, as Toadie struggles to move on with his life.
When the character finally returns to Ramsay Street next week, he will begin to alienate everyone around him as he lashes out at his family when they try to help him.
The father-of-one can’t keep his grief in check and the fan-favourite’s life quickly spirals out of control.
Viewers will remember Toadie fled to America for a brief respite following Sonya’s death, but he doesn’t come back to town refreshed and at peace – quite the opposite.
His anger floods back in almost immediately when he realises his brother Shane (Nicholas Coghlan) and sister-in-law Dipi (Sharon Johal) have made a rash decision.
Returning to the house at number 30, Toadie is stunned to see the couple have packed away Sonya’s things without consulting him first.
Shane and Dipi feel terrible when they realise the impact of their actions, having believed they were helping Toadie in the long grief process.
Instead, Toadie lashes out against the couple and relations turn frosty very quickly.
Toadie is in no mood for forgiveness and orders Shane and Dipi to start looking for somewhere else to live instead.
Unfortunately, the widowed father lives to regret his decision.
Shane and Dipi are busy planning their next phase when Toadie is floundering trying to manage Nell and baby Hugo on his own.
When Toadie learns there’s issues facing the childcare programme at the community centre too, Susan Kennedy steps in and warns the lawyer he needs to appreciate his family in times of hardship.
After some drama on Ramsay Street, Toadie apologises to Shane and Dipi, and while it’s an awkward conversation at first, the trio agree to find a way to move forward.
The couple stay at number 30, and Toadie leans on his family as the loss of Sonya continues to take him in its clutches.
Neighbours airs these scenes on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday, April 25 at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
