Mason Greenwood could reportedly land a surprise reunion with Marcus Rashford that would benefit his former club Manchester United. Greenwood is currently scoring for fun at Marseille, the club he joined permanently in the summer of 2024. He has bagged six goals in just eight league games, with four of those coming in a single game.
The former United man was on fire as Marseille cruised to a 6-2 win over Le Havre earlier this month. Greenwood opened the scoring with a penalty in the first half before adding three more goals in the space of nine minutes. His electric display could reportedly have far-reaching consequences when it comes to a potential transfer in the future.
Barcelona FC scouts were in the stands to watch Greenwood and were left impressed with his dazzling performance, according to The Sun. If they decide to make a move next summer, it could see the 24-year-old reunited with Rashford at the Nou Camp.
The latter is currently on loan at Barcelona, who have the option to buy him for around £26.2million at the end of the season. Rashford has enjoyed a productive spell with the Catalan giants and a permanent deal would appear to be a real possibility.
Greenwood, meanwhile, has been tipped for a big move as a result of his clinical form at Marseille. United would reap the benefits of a sale because they are entitled to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee.
Barcelona have reportedly been tracking Greenwood since he was loaned to Getafe last season. Earlier this year, it was reported that he was homesick in France despite living with his partner Harriet Robson and their two young daughters.
He was previously regarded as one of Europe’s hottest prospects after breaking through United’s academy and making his mark at senior level.
Greenwood’s career ground to a halt when he was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in 2022. The following year, those charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
United went on to conduct their own internal investigation, after which they decided to sell him in response to backlash from fans, women’s support groups and members of staff.
Greenwood scored eight goals in 33 appearances for Getafe before he was sold to Marseille in a deal worth around £27.6m. Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille, was unhappy at the time and described the move as a ‘disgrace’.
In his first season, Greenwood helped the French giants to finish second in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Champions League. He ended up with 21 league goals, which saw him finish as joint-top scorer alongside PSG forward Ousmane Dembele.
