Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly ready to extend Casemiro’s contract, provided one condition is met. The seasoned midfielder’s current deal is set to end on June 30, but United have the option to extend it by a year. Despite being linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window, Casemiro made it clear he wanted to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place in Amorim’s team.
The 33-year-old, who was signed from Real Madrid for £70million in 2022, has done just that, securing his position as Amorim’s first choice in central midfield with Bruno Fernandes. Casemiro has been instrumental for United this season, contributing three goals and an assist in 10 Premier League matches. His performance has also revived his international career with Brazil, impressing national team boss Carlo Ancelotti.
When Casemiro joined United over three years ago, he was given a contract worth approximately £350,000 per week. His hefty wages have often been cited as a reason to let him go when his contract ends this summer.
However, his performances this season have won him many supporters within the club, including Amorim himself, who is ready to keep him for another year, according to talkSPORT. Casemiro is a well-liked member of the squad, and his experience and leadership have been key in the team’s recent improvement in form.
Amorim is reportedly open to extending Casemiro’s contract, who will be turning 34 in February, on the condition that he agrees to a pay cut. Following the 4-2 victory over Brighton last month, Amorim praised Casemiro’s performance: “I think he gives a lot of experience. He’s an example for everyone.
“In the beginning, he was behind every midfielder, even Toby [Collyer], but he fought and he worked, and now he’s back in the national team. He’s so important for us.”
Before drawing with Tottenham, Amorim was questioned about Casemiro’s situation. He responded: “Yeah, we don’t know what is going to happen. My goal is to continue to count with Casemiro, with Harry Maguire, that he has the same problem.
“I don’t know what is going to happen. Let’s focus on this season. I’m really happy with Casemiro, he is really important. I’m really happy with Harry, but I know what you guys are asking, let’s focus on this season and then we’ll see the next season.”
Casemiro also spoke about his future plans. “Football is my life, right? So it’s inevitable [to continue],” he said.
“But I think my wife and family will want some time for themselves, yes.
“I’m one of those who think that in life you have to have a plan. But I’m into short-term goals. Of course, it’s inevitable to think about being in good shape for a World Cup, but you can’t expect to be in good shape for the World Cup if you’re not doing well at Manchester United.”
