The 49-year-old was in a black Jaguar four-by-four at a junction across the road from the youth hub Harry and Meghan visited earlier today when an object was thrown at his vehicle, police said.

When he got out of his car, he struggled with four people – at least two of whom were teenagers.

He was rushed to hospital with a serious head injury, where he remains in a critical condition.

One of the attackers is described as white, 5ft 6in tall and aged 15 to 17.

He was wearing a black jacket with grey tracksuit trousers and black trainers and may have been wielding a stick.

The Jaguar remains inside the police cordon with forensics still sweeping the scene and officers examining CCTV.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “Detectives are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, or who has any information which could help them with their inquiries, to come forward.”
