Netflix has just announced Luther will be returning in a new feature film, which will also star Dermot Crowley, as Martin Schenk.
The new film will act as a follow-up to Luther: The Fallen Sun, which was released in 2023.
Director Jamie Payne and screenwriter Neil Cross, who created the flagship mystery series, will be back for the new project.
Also returning is the formidable Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan, and Cross expressed his excitement.
He told Tudum: “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family.
“I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around.
“So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
The new film will see a brutal, seemingly random wave of murders hit London and Luther is secretly called back into service.
His task is impeded by the fact everyone on all sides seems to want him dead.
Director Payne described it as “a wonderfully dark tale”, sharing it was a “true joy to be back”.
He added: “I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.
“Fans new and old are in for a treat!” After sharing the news on the official Netflix X account, fans flocked to the comments to express their excitement.
Nick New commented: “Idris, Ruth and Dermot reunited? Take my night, my weekend, my soul.”
NoCapNews added: “That’s thrilling news — Elba’s return as Luther always promises dark, gripping storytelling at its best.”
Lofty Reigner commented: “The cast is already phenomenal, what else can we ask for.”
