Bargain of the week

Chapoutier Cotes Du Rhone Villages, £7 (normally £9), Tesco

The family behind this has been making wine in the Rhone Valley for seven generations. This one’s a classic red blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan grapes. Think red fruits and spice with a kick of generous alcohol at 14 pc. Perfect cold-weather red.

White wine

Loriato Trebbiano, £7.49, Waitrose

Simple but delicious, this brilliant northern Italian white is made from the Trebbiano grape. Crisp and fresh with lovely lemon flavours, there’s a dash of white peach, too. Perfect fridge-door white.

Food pairing: Fishcakes.

Red wine

Four Winemakers Malbec 2018, £6, Co-op

Love this juicy bramble fruit-loaded red made by a team of four winemaking friends from Argentina from the country’s star Malbec grape. There’s plenty of flavour but it’s not too heavy or teeth-coatingly tannic. Incredible value.

Food pairing: Sausage casserole.

Sparkling wine

Craft 3 Sparkling Brut NV, £12, M&S

Made in South Australia from the three grapes behind most champagnes — Chardonnay, Pinot Noit and Pinot Meunier. It’s also made in the same way as champagne. Like drinking crushed lemon biscuits.

Food pairing: Cheese straws.
