Sir Keir Starmer was challenged to ensure “biological males” are removed from women’s prisons during Prime Minister’s Questions. The PM was challenged by Reigate MP Rebecca Paul. Ms Paul claimed they are mixing with women in a Surrey prison.
Challenging the Labour leader, the Tory MP said: “I would like to ask the Prime Minister for his help. It’s been over six months since the Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of sex yet public institutions are still knowingly and intentionally breaching the law.
“HMP Downview, a women’s prison in Banstead, has five biological males in it. And if that wasn’t bad enough, those males are mixing with the women in the daytime without adequate supervision.
“Will the Prime Minister ensure biological males are moved out of women’s prisons immediately?”
Sir Keir said Ms Paul was right that the Supreme Court’s ruling that under equalities law a woman s defined by biological sex must be respected.
He said: “The Supreme Court ruling must be implemented in full and at all levels. She is absolutely right about that.
“She has raised these examples with me. I will make sure they are looked into and make sure she gets a proper reply in relation to the particular example.”
