A film that garnered glowing reviews and has been hailed as ‘dazzling’ by cinema enthusiasts is scheduled to broadcast on the BBC.
It’s a beloved musical masterpiece from 2016 that dominated the awards circuit in 2017, claiming numerous Oscars and Academy Awards. Featuring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the lead parts, La La Land chronicles the story of aspiring jazz musician Sebastian, portrayed by Gosling, and would-be actress Mia, brought to life by Stone.
Based in Los Angeles, the duo discover romance whilst battling to fulfil their ambitions. Upon its debut, reviewers drew parallels between Stone and Gosling and legendary performers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, plus Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds.
The two-hour production has garnered exceptional praise throughout the years and boasts an outstanding 91 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Posting on Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer said: “This movie is THE best movie I have ever seen. The cinematography, the acting, the storytelling, the music, everything. The way this movie describes the culture of LA and the story of how so many try to become “great”. This movie is just impeccable.”, reports the Mirror.
“The coloring and composition of it is absolutely perfect. SPOILER: The ending is just a perfect illustration of reality and how everything doesn’t always turn out the way that it is planned. This movie is just like the most perfect movie like oh my gosh.”
One fan wrote a lengthy tribute, saying, “Damien Chazelle’s La La Land is a dazzling romantic musical that celebrates dreams and scrutinises the sacrifices needed to realise them. Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the film follows Sebastian, a jazz purist yearning to open his own club, and Mia, an aspiring actress pursuing stardom.
“Their love story intertwines with their struggles to balance personal ambition and their relationship. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Los Angeles, La La Land is visually stunning, with choreographed musical numbers that blend nostalgia for classic Hollywood with modern sensibilities.
“The narrative progresses through the seasons, mirroring the evolution of Mia and Sebastian’s romance-from its charming beginnings to its bittersweet conclusion. While their differing goals create tension, the film explores how their connection inspires both to pursue their dreams. Gosling and Stone deliver magnetic performances, with Emma Stone’s portrayal of Mia earning her an Academy Award.
“The soundtrack, featuring hits like “City of Stars,” adds emotional depth to the story. The film’s imaginative finale-a dreamlike sequence envisioning an alternate ending-captures the tension between love and ambition. Ultimately, La La Land is a heartfelt ode to dreamers, celebrating the beauty and cost of following one’s passions.”
However, not everyone is a fan of La La Land, as one person gave it one star and wrote, “Did not even get to ten minutes, despise that it was a musical.”
Another shared similar feelings as they posted, “Um…5 years and they don’t even call each other?”I will always love you” but I won’t visit or call? The whole movie was a bit like, wait, what? ! But the ending was obnoxious. I was expecting to enjoy this, but it is not my cup of tea.
“Mediocre singing and dancing. Wish they had gotten real musical theatre stars,” said a third.
La La Land will air on Monday 10 November on BBC3 at 10pm.
