Africa is becoming more and more popular with tourists. As a result, visitors are starting to explore the corners of the world’s second-largest continent that they might have avoided before. One of those travellers is Tayo Aina, who recently visited Africa’s emptiest country.
Tayo runs a popular YouTube channel called TayoAinaFilms, where he shares travel videos from around the world. He recently travelled to Namibia, and one thing stood out to him right away in Africa’s emptiest country. And it was, perhaps, to be expected.
In his video titled “I visited Africa’s emptiest country”, he said: “This is what it looks like to visit the second emptiest country in the world.
“I travelled to Namibia and once I landed I was shocked by how empty everywhere was. There was nobody on the street and it looked like I landed in a ghost town.
“I had to ask my driver where everybody was and then he told me that the total population was just 2.5 million people. That’s like the size of a local government in Lagos.”
He added: “During my drive across town it took me up to 30 minutes before I saw another car on the road.”
Tayo also tried some unusual dishes. “After driving for some time I was hungry so I stopped by this restaurant to try out some local Namibian dishes and for the first time I got to eat a zebra and a giraffe – and it tasted really good,” he said.
His adventure included a visit to Deadvlei, where 900-year-old trees still stand in the middle of the desert. “All I could think about was to get a picture for Instagram,” he joked.
He later climbed a huge sand dune and visited a point where the desert meets the sea.
“It was so beautiful,” he said. “Before now, I had never thought about visiting Namibia, but after my trip it has become one of my favourite places to see in Africa and I really can’t wait to go back.”
Namibia is more than three times the size of the UK, but with a population of just over three million as of 2025, according to the latest estimates.
In comparison, the UK has nearly 70 million people.
The country’s beautiful landscapes stretch from dry deserts to the stunning Atlantic coastline.
Namibia is often described as one of the most visually stunning places in Africa. It has everything from huge dunes to salt pans, rocky mountains, and rare wildlife.
Visitors can hike the jaw-dropping orange dunes of Sossusvlei, see wildlife in Etosha National Park, and explore the Skeleton Coast with old shipwrecks and animal bones.
It’s also one of the best places in the world for stargazing, thanks to clear skies and almost no light pollution.
