DEAR DEIDRE: I HATE that my dad has started seeing another woman since my mother died.

I cannot help but see her as a replacement for my mum.

I am a girl of 17 and Mum died three years ago from cancer.

My parents were childhood sweethearts and together for 25 years. They would have grown old together.

Dad is 53 and hopefully has many years ahead. Last month he told my older brother about his new girlfriend.

My brother is 24 and we’re very close. I think Dad was hoping he’d help him break the news to me.

I do not know her, nor do I want to know her. I feel so selfish.

I’m torn between wanting him to be happy and feeling awful that Mum isn’t with him any longer.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your mum and dad had a long, happy marriage but now he’s alone it is natural that he wants to find happiness again.

She will never be a replacement for your mum but losing a partner is not the same as losing a parent.

Your feelings are tied up with grieving for your mum.
