Sleep is very important for bodily function as it helps improve mental wellbeing and boosts immunity. A person who doesn’t get enough sleep is at increased risk of developing serious medical conditions such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Stress from work and relationships and the clocks going forward in a couple of weeks are major factors that can affect people’s sleep patterns. But one way you can ensure a peaceful night’s rest, right through until morning, is to drink strawberry milk.
Milk is often recommended as a drink to have before bed because it contains tryptophan, an amino acid.
The body turns tryptophan into a B vitamin known as niacin.
Niacin plays a key role in the creation of serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that’s associated with sleep and melatonin levels.
Melatonin is hormone that controls your sleep-wale cycles.
Strawberries are rich in the vitamin B6, which also benefits the body by converting tryptophan into serotonin, which then regulated melatonin.
Research by the University of Adelaide in 2018 supports a link between B6 and a good night’s rest.
Those who took a supplement before bed reported better quality of sleep and feeling more refreshed on waking.
To reap the benefits of this drink you should be sure to use fresh strawberries rather than strawberry flavouring.
Healthline offers the following recipe to make sleep-boosting strawberry milk.
- 4 tbsp strawberry puree
- 2 cups roughly chopped strawberries
- 2 tbsp honey, or to taste
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- 8oz milk of your choice
- 1 tbsp chopped strawberries
1. For the puree, blend the strawberries, honey, vanilla and salt until smooth in a high-speed blender.
2. For the strawberry milk, add 4 tbsp of the strawberry puree and 1 tbsp of chopped strawberries to each glass.
3. Top with your cold or heated milk of choice.
