How to keep orchids blooming nonstop with two easy tasks

Orchids, renowned for their exotic beauty as houseplants, require attentive care not just to flower, but also to flourish and become robust.

One green-fingered enthusiast took to the Orchids Tips and Tricks Facebook group, uploading a snapshot of the radiant orchid she brought back from the brink.

Kara Hill shared her accomplishment: “This is my first ‘death row rescue’ to bloom this year. She’s so pretty and looks so happy.”

Sparing no effort, Kara revealed that she battled pests with the use of neem oil to safeguard her delicate plant’s health.

Spurred by Kara’s success story, another orchid owner reflected on their own experience with the same type of phalaenopsis orchids.

Lee Bradshaw exclaimed: “I have that exact one. It’s been blooming nonstop for over two years. A mini one. Love your shiny leaves.”

While orchid houseplants are known to showcase their splendour every eight to 12 months, some tricks can coax them into flowering again.

Curious group members inquired how Lee coaxed continuous blooms from an orchid that seemed to be on its last legs, prompting him to share his straightforward technique.

He said: “I left it in its little pot with the moss in bright light on a windowsill, and I soak it every 10 days or so in dilute fertiliser water. It has never stopped blooming.”

Regularly providing orchids with fertiliser is crucial for supplying necessary nutrients, vital for their health and the vibrancy of their blooms.

Yet, many still either neglect this step or find themselves befuddled by the specifics of fertilising these tropical beauties.

Experts suggest feeding phalaenopsis orchids bi-weekly or at least monthly, but only once their flowers have fallen off. When it comes to fertilising these plants, opt for a diluted mix of balanced plant food – one that offers equal proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (look out for 20-20-20 on the packaging).

The fertiliser should be used at half its strength, so blend it with an equivalent volume of water before applying it to your orchid. Remember to skip the usual watering routine on the days you fertilise.

Using a watering can or vessel, gently pour the fertiliser into the pot, taking care to avoid the leaves. Make sure to drain any surplus solution afterwards.
