High blood pressure: The ‘superfood’ supplement proven to help lower your reading

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can go untreated because symptoms of the condition don’t always show or are easy to spot. The best way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have your reading checked by your GP. Simple lifestyle changes such as getting more exercise and stopping smoking can help lower high blood pressure. Another way is by watching what you eat.

The NHS recommends cutting your salt intake to less than 6g a day, eating a low-fat, balanced diet which includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, cursing down on alcohol and drinking less caffeine.

Salt, alcohol and caffeine have all been found to raise blood pressure.

But other foods have proven to help hypertension – one in particular being celery seeds.

Dubbed a ‘superfood’ in recent years, celery seeds are available in supplement form and in its natural form.

It’s often used to flavour soups, stews and other savoury dishes.

Studies in rodents have shown celery seeds to be effective at lowering blood pressure.

Researchers believe a variety of substances in celery may cause this effect.

Celery contains a phytochemical called phthalides. As an extract, it’s called NBP, and it relates the tissues of the artery walls to increase blood flow and reduce blood pressure, according to Cleveland Clinic.

But to reap the full benefits of celery it’s advised you eat the whole food.

Celery stalk salt content is low, and you also get fibre, magnesium and potassium to help regulate your blood pressure, as well, Dr Kenneth Shafer of Department of Cardiovascular Medicine told the publication.

He added: “To get the benefit, you should eat roughly four stalks – one cup, chopped – of celery daily.”

Experts also recommend eating plenty of potassium to lower high blood pressure.

Blood Pressure UK explains: “Your kidneys help to control your blood pressure by controlling the amount of fluid stored in your body. The more fluid, the higher your blood pressure.

“Your kidneys do this by filtering your blood and sucking out any extra fluid, which it then stores in your bladder as urine.

“This process uses a delicate balance of sodium and potassium to pull the water across a wall of cells from the bloodstream into a collecting channel that leads to the bladder.

“Eating salt raises the amount of sodium in your bloodstream and wrecks the delicate balance, reducing the ability of your kidneys to remove the water.”

By eating more potassium, you can help your kidneys work more efficiently.
