Will Gentleman Jack season 2 be delayed?

The Gentleman Jack season two release date is unlikely to be before 2021.

Speaking to Express.co.uk exclusively, Gentleman Jack writer Sally Wainwright revealed that filming on season two would not start until mid-next year.

After pointing out that the first season took her 14 months to write, she said: “We’re hoping to try and speed up the process this time.

“We have to actually as we start filming in May next year so I can’t take 14 months to write this one.”

WHEN WAS SURANNE JONES IN CORONATION STREET?

If filming does not start until May 2020, then Gentleman Jack will not air until late 2020 at the earliest or, more likely, 2021.

However, a recent progress report from the transcriber of Anne Lister’s (played in Gentleman Jack by Suranne Jones) diaries Anne Choma suggests they are making progress on the show.

She tweeted in July: “Hey #gentlemanjack fans we’re working hard on SEASON 2.

“Over 300,000 words of new diary transcription already completed!! @BBCOne”

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END OF GENTLEMAN JACK?

Wainwright said of this process: “We learned a lot from the first series, it was a massive experiment and it seems to have worked. I just hope to speed up the process.”

Season two will take us from 1834 to 1836 in Lister’s life and show us what married life looks like between her and Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle).

Wainwright told Digital Spy of the plot of Gentleman Jack season two: “‘They move into Shibden together in series two.

“It’s about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship as well.”

IS GENTLEMAN JACK BASED ON A TRUE STORY?

The second series may also likely see a few more international locations after the ending of Gentleman Jack saw Anne in Copenhagen.

Wainwright told Radio Times: “First they went to North Yorkshire, and then they went down to Geneva and they spent some time walking around the foothills of Mont Blanc.”

BBC viewers in the UK, however, should expect a delay compared to viewers watching Gentleman Jack on HBO.

Season one of Gentleman Jack began in the US on 22 April, 2019, while the series did not start on the BBC until May 19.
