They tried to intervene but the helpless animal was already dead, it’s reported.
The horrific attack happened in Norton, Teesside, and was reported to hedgehog rescue group HoggyStockton Rescue.
Anne Purchase-Walker, from the group, told Teeside Live she was “horrified” after hearing what had happened.
She said: “We are sadly not surprised. Hoggy Stockton Rescue Centre opens its doors in 2016.
“Since that time we have been made aware of four cruelty cases, all of which have happened in the last two years and two involving youths and children.
“This behaviour is completely and utterly unacceptable.
“We don’t condone it and we’re doing everything we can to stop it.”

She added: “To be kind to animals, children need to experience kindness in their lives and see kindness to animals – domestic and wild.
“They need to be part of a community that cares for animals.
“If children don’t experience that, then sometimes they can be cruel to animals. This is very sad.”
