Foreign Office issues £125 alert to all British passport holders | Travel News | Travel

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a warning to all British passport holders, as a mistake made while abroad could cost them £125.

The FCDO is responsible for many duties, including providing crucial information to ensure Brits stay safe whilst travelling overseas.

And a new update posted on X, previously known as Twitter, reads: “Lost your passport abroad? If your passport is lost, stolen or damaged, you’ll need an Emergency Travel Document to get home.

“They cost £125 & can usually be collected after 2 working days.” A simple graphic accompanying the alert advises: “Keep your passport safe”.

Additional details found on a Gov.uk link within the update explain: “An emergency travel document lets you travel from abroad if you need to travel urgently and cannot use your UK passport. It is typically only valid for one single or return journey.

“You can travel through a maximum of 5 countries.”

You’ll only be eligible to apply for an emergency travel document if you’re a British national currently outside the UK.

Your British passport must have been lost, stolen or damaged – or be full, have recently expired, or be with HM Passport Office or a foreign embassy.

You must also need to travel within six weeks, be unable to renew or replace your UK passport from abroad before you travel, and have had a valid UK passport that was issued on or after January 1, 2006.
