Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has wowed its most loyal fans with the launch of its first ever chicken sandwich in the fast food chain’s 45-year history.
The restaurant chain, which was founded in New Orleans in 1972, unveiled the new dish last week – prompting many to point out that it seemed as though Popeyes was attempting to come after Chick-fil-A with the launch of an item that is widely known as one of it’s rivals most popular dishes.
However any questions that chicken lovers had about whether or not the sandwich would live up to other similar offerings were quickly put to rest after the item was released nationwide on Monday, sparking a frenzy from foodies on social media.
Eat up! Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has delighted fans by launching its first ever chicken sandwich in the chain’s 45-year history
The newly-launched chicken sandwich costs $3.99, and contains a buttermilk battered and hand breaded white meat chicken fillet with barrel cured pickles between a toasted brioche fun, and customers have the option of topping that with mayonnaise or spicy Cajun spread.
Many Twitter users appear to favor the spicy option – and some have gone as far to suggest that people can improve the flavor even further by adding their own toppings picked up at the chain store.
‘A’ye that Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich ? 111111111% worth the hype,’ one person wrote on Twitter.
‘My body went limp after the first bite but imma little dramatic so… Also better than Chick-fil-A. That’s not an exaggeration. Try it with some blackened ranch dipping sauce.’
Another chimed in: ‘The Popeyes Spicy Chicken Sandwich is so good I’m writing it in for President in 2020.’
Winner: Social media users were quick to praise the new menu item, with many joking that it was the tastiest thing they had ever eaten
‘Worth the hype’: Plenty of people used entertaining gifs to reiterate their love of the sandwich
Popular: Dozens of Twitter users expressed their happiness at trying the sandwich for the very first time
Plenty of people used gifs to communicate their feelings about the new launch, with one person writing, ‘So, I thought y’all were being ridiculous like usual on Twitter over this chicken sandwich but I just got back from Popeyes and man…’ while sharing a clip of someone doing a front flip.
One very enthusiastic taste tester proclaimed the chicken sandwich to have given him the best moments of his life, commenting: ‘PSA: eating Popeyes new chicken sandwich was the best 5 minutes of my 24 years.’
Another joked: ‘Something in that Popeyes chicken sandwich has to be illegal cause I’m sad I only bought two,’ while one simply stated: ‘I don’t think there’s anything in this world that taste better than the Popeyes chicken sandwich.’
The sandwich was officially launched in one California location at the end of the last week, an announcement that sparked delight among the chain’s most dedicated customers – particularly after it was revealed that the menu item would be launched nationwide just days later.
Clearly determined to launch with a bang however, Popeyes chose an intriguing location to first debut the sandwich – opting to give the very first batches to Sweet Dixie Kitchen, a restaurant in Long Beach that went viral after its owner was seen carrying bags of Popeyes chicken into the location in order to pass it off as her own.
A picture is worth a thousand words: Many people chose to share silly images and videos with their tweets to truly capture their joy
‘To be honest, I thought they were calling to sue me,’ Kim Sánchez, owner of Sweet Dixie Kitchen, said of the moment she received the call from Popeyes.
‘We have a long history with Popeyes, but we’ve always said Popeyes chicken is the best fried chicken we ever had. So, we are thrilled to collaborate with them to launch and serve their delicious chicken sandwich.’
And it seems the restaurant is not alone in its high estimations of Popeyes’ food, at least if the viral response to the chicken sandwich is anything to go by.
However, this is not the first time that the chain has sparked something of a social media meltdown with one of its newest launches.
In June, Popeyes celebrated the NBA draft – and the New Orleans Pelicans’ number one pick in particular – with wings. A whole lot of wings.

Accessorize! Meanwhile back in May, it marked Mardi Gras with the launch of bead necklace boxes so people could carry around their chicken on the go
There had been plenty of speculation that the Pelicans intended to draft Zion Williamson, an 18-year-old who played a single season for the Duke Blue Devils, with their first pick on June 20, which the team did.
But since Williamson has an impressive wingspan of 6 feet 10 inches, Popeyes decided to launch a special ‘Wingspan Box’ of the same length — filled with 77 boneless wings, 11 biscuits, and 11 servings of fries.
The very long box of food certainly puts Williamson’s size into perspective.
The North Carolina teen — who, at 6 feet 7 inches, is also quite tall — has put his powerful arms to good use as a small forward and power forward, racking up several awards at Duke included ACC Player of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year.
The $74.69 multi-meal was only available for a limited time, exclusively at the Popeyes location on Canal Street in New Orleans, starting on draft day.
