A road trip is the perfect summer getaway, and Europe is home to some of the most beautiful ones in the world. One of these routes is so gorgeous it’s even been seen on screen in movies and TV shows – and it’s the best way to see the stunning scenery.
Stokksnes Peninsula in Iceland has recently been voted the most scenic road trip in Europe. Set just 10 minutes off the famous Iceland Ring Road, this village and surrounding area are well worth a quick detour. By analysing thousands of Reddit comments, the team at Saga Car Insurance revealed the top road trip routes and this one was a favourite.
The route will take you past dramatic black sand beaches, staggering mountain ranges and even a replica Viking settlement used in The Witcher: Blood Origin.
The peninsula costs 900 ISK (£5.40) per person, regardless if you’re in a car or on foot.
If you’re going to visit this beautiful, remote spot the best time of year varies depending on what you want.
From late August to early April you have the best chance of seeing the northern lights – but the best time to drive the mountain roads is from July through to September.
This allows the warmest weather, the longest daylight hours and the highest chance that all the mountain roads will be open.
These mountain roads have gravel surfaces with river crossings and incredible scenery but are only accessible with a 4×4 vehicle during the summer. It’s also worth noting that off-road driving is illegal in Iceland.
The Icelandic Ring Route, which Stokksnes sits off, is an amazing 825 miles long, and takes drivers through all of Iceland’s major towns.
You’ll also pass incredible black sand beaches, towering volcanoes, and lagoons filled with glistening blue icebergs. It’s like taking a trip to another planet entirely.
