Jurors heard the couple, who had been married for 10 years, had a turbulent relationship and that Mrs Clark goaded him about having a “small d***”.

And he today told Birmingham Crown Court that comments about his manhood made him feel “inadequate” and “sad”.

Jurors also heard his wife had a lesbian fling with one of their friend’s daughters which led to an argument on the night she was stabbed to death.

Clark claimed his wife would “taunt” him and “say horrible things” and that she threatened to “headbutt him” and “bust his nose”.

He said: “She’d call me names, taunt me and stuff. She’d get right up to me, to my face.

“She would like to say ‘I’m going to headbutt you, bust your nose’. She was just angry.”

Asked how she would make him feel, he replied: “Like I wasn’t worth it – like I wasn’t a man.”

Jurors have already been told how the victim was found dead at the couple’s home in Cloverdale, Stoke Prior, near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, in the early hours of January 1.

The couple had been playing a drinking game in the hours leading up to the incident, the jury was told.

Clark is alleged to have stabbed her in the chest with a “dagger-shaped cook’s knife” before dialling 999 and confessing to killing her.

Emergency services were called to the marital home after Clark told operators: “I’ve killed my wife.”

He is alleged to have said: “She f***ing did my head in. I’m f***ing devastated. I don’t know why I did it.”

Giving evidence for the first time during his trial, Clark claimed his wife had had a problem with alcohol since 2015 and was “not pleasant to be around” when drinking.

He said: “It never stopped. It was almost every night.”

The couple moved to England in 2011, having married in South Africa in 2004.

Clark’s barrister asked him about a WhatsApp conversation, concerning a sex toy and his penis size, between him and his wife on January 18, 2016.

Clark said to her: “Hey, you could use a small one and think of me.”

She replied: “Lol, yes – yours isn’t that small.”

Alisdair Williamson QC, for Clark, asked: “Is that something she often talked about? What would she say about it?”

He replied: “Comments in conversation, she would nearly always refer to it. Just say it was small.”

Asked how that had made him feel during their relationship, he replied: “Inadequate. I felt so sad.”
