‘Encourage blooms’ on your peace lily all year long with ‘fantastic’ two-ingredient feed

Peace lilies are gorgeous houseplants, known for their glossy green leaves and white flowers.

Like all houseplants, they enjoy a feed every now and again, but buying fertiliser from the garden centre can be pricey.

Instead, make a homemade one using banana peel, which has been recommended by an expert.

Plant expert Hannah Rowson at J.Parkers said: “To encourage blooms on your peace lily, meet its lighting and watering conditions.

“It’s important to feed your houseplants as well. Steeped banana skins are a fantastic homemade fertiliser, but you can use any balanced fertiliser.”

The fruit provides lots of potassium to the soil which will help the houseplant thrive and grow throughout the year.

The plant pro added: “The general rule of thumb is to fertilise your plants once every two to three waterings in spring and summer and reducing this back to as low as once every four waterings when the growing season is over in autumn and water.

“However, this all depends entirely on the condition of your plant. If it is growing fast, you can give it a bit more plant food.”

You can soak, boil or bake banana peels to make the homemade fertiliser for your peace lily.

To soak them, cut the peels into small pieces and soak them in water for up to a week.

Stir the water occasionally to help the peels soften and release nutrients into the jar or bowl.

When you’re ready to feed your houseplant, mix the banana water with five parts clean water and simply water your peace lily.

This can be repeated weekly during the flowering season, but less often during the winter months.

When watering a peace lily in the colder months of the year, ensure the top two inches of the soil are dry before proceeding.

To make fertiliser by boiling, simply boil a banana peel in water for 15 minutes, then let it cool.

Once it has reached room temperature, simply use it to water your houseplant.
